Firelight
Sophie Jordan
(Firelight #1)
Published September 7th 2010

I just saw the cover for the second book in this series and it reminded me how much I really want to read this series.

Firelight description:
A hidden truth.
Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.

Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide...

Hex Hall
Rachel Hawkins
(Hex Hall #1)
Published March 2nd 2010

I have an ARC on Demonglass and I cannot wait to get started on this series. I have heard great things about Hex Hall so now I need to find me a copy.

Hex Hall description:
Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Hard Bitten
Chloe Neill
(Chicagoland Vampires #4)
Expected publication: May 3rd 2011

I LOVE this series it's so great and I really look forward to this book, May feels like a lifetime away...

Hard Bitten description:
Times are hard for newly minted vampire Merit. Ever since shapeshifters announced their presence to the world, humans have been rallying against supernaturals--and they're camping outside of Cadogan House with protest signs that could turn to pitchforks at any moment. Inside its doors, things between Merit and her Master, green-eyed heartbreaker Ethan Sullivan are ... tense. But then the mayor of Chicago calls Merit and Ethan to a clandestine meeting and tells them about a violent vamp attack that has left three women missing. His message is simple: get your House in order. Or else.

Merit needs to get to the bottom of this crime, but it doesn't help that she can't tell who's on her side. So she secretly calls in a favor from someone who's tall, dark, and part of underground vamp group that may have some deep intel on the attack. Merit soon finds herself in the heady, dark heart of Chicago's supernatural society--a world full of vampires who seem too ready to fulfill the protesting human's worst fears, and a place where she'll learn that you can't be a vampire without getting a little blood on your hands...

Two new covers:

Expected release: November 2011.

What do you think of these?

Review: Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting

Book two in The Body Finder series

About Desires of the Dead

The missing dead call to Violet. They want to be found.

Violet can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.

As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she'd turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.

Review

I didn't think it was possible but I liked this book even more than the first.
I enjoyed watching Violet and Jay’s relationship grow and see how their relationship gets deeper and more serious.

I like that as a reader I still got to read some chapters from the POV of the new "danger". I was afraid that it was something that was limited to the first book. It really adds something mysterious to the book and you really try to figure everything out ahead of time and before everything gets revealed at the end.

The book focuses a lot on trust. Who is the right person to trust and who will believe you when you carry around a secret as big as Violet’s.

This was a very good sequel and it was everything I hoped it would be and it didn’t disappoint.
If you enjoyed the first one then this is a must read.

I give Desires of the Dead 4 out of 5.

[Thank you Elise from Bookish Delights for sending me an ARC of this book]

Previous books in the series:

Review: The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

Book one in The Body Finder series

About The Body Finder

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat left for her. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, Violet realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.

Review

This was a book I couldn't put down. When I opened the book one page took the next until the end.
Violet's ability is different and it creates a lot of tension and uncertainty in her life.
The series killer is very creepy and it's a really nice touch that you get the POV of the killer it adds extra suspense to the story.

I'm very intrigued by the relationship between Violet and Jay, how they are best friends and they both secretly want more from each other, be more than friends but none of them is willing to take the final step.
It's very sweet and I like how they watch out for each other.

I like how the book mixes real life and the supernatural world. How we follow a teenager who has to balance her everyday life (school, family, friends, love) with her ability to find dead bodies. It’s not easy to be a normal teenager so it’s definitely not easy to be Violet.

I give The Body Finder 4 out of 5.

My Soul to Take
Rachel Vincent
(Soul Screamers #1)
Published August 1st 2009

I love Rachel Vincent's Shifters series but I haven't had the fortune to start this series yet. If it's nearly as great as her Shifters series it's going to be a fantastic read.

My Soul to Take description:
She doesn't see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.
Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next.

The Iron King
Julie Kagawa
(Iron Fey #1)
Published February 1st 2010

I have wanted to start this series for a while. I have heard some great thing about this book and the cover looks awesome. I hope to get my fingers on a copy soon.

The Iron King description:
Meghan Chase has a secret destiny—one she could never have imagined…
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth—that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

13 To Life
Shannon Delany
(13 to Life #1)
Published June 22nd 2010

I'm very excited to start the series, the book sounds interesting and book two has just been released so what better time to begin this series.

13 To Life description:
Something strange is stalking the small town of Junction…
When junior Jess Gillmansen gets called out of class by Guidance, she can only presume it’s for one of two reasons. Either they’ve finally figured out who wrote the scathing anti-jock editorial in the school newspaper or they’re hosting yet another intervention for her about her mom. Although far from expecting it, she’s relieved to discover Guidance just wants her to show a new student around—but he comes with issues of his own including a police escort.
The newest member of Junction High, Pietr Rusakova has secrets to hide--secrets that will bring big trouble to the small town of Junction—secrets including dramatic changes he’s undergoing that will surely end his life early.

Review: Graceling by Kristin Cashore

About Graceling

Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight — she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme, and in her case horrifying, skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug. When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change.
She never expects to become Po’s friend. She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace — or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away... a secret that could destroy all seven kingdoms with words alone.

Review

This book was very interesting and it was nice to read some fantasy again.
The writing was good, the world was though trough, the characters where lovable and the plot was very good.

I like the idea of some people having been born with a grace, people with a special gift for something.
I really felt like I understood Katsa in many of her problems and challenges and it was believable that she acted the way she did in her situation and made the decisions she did.

I enjoyed the books focus on love and friendship and how Katsa gets stronger and grows when she realise how important these things are for her. She learns to care for other people and open up a part of herself to another person.
The big plot in the book is about power. Who has the most power and how do you use the power you have been given.

A thing I was not so fond of was the ending, it did not end the way I had hoped it would. After reading the end I sat there with this feeling that I wanted a little more from the book.

I thought this book was a good book and I recommend it to people who like fantasy and a good adventure. It reminded me a little of Tamora Pierce’s books and I love those with there strong main character and a lot of magic.

I give Graceling 4 out of 5.

Next in the series:

2# Fire

3# Bitterblue (Expected release September 15th 2011)

Cover art (3)

Everlasting by Alyson Nöel

I have not read anything by Alyson Nöel yet but I really love this cover.
There's a chemistry between the couple and the color is beautiful.
I like the detail with the flower at the bottom.

This is book number six and the final book in The Immortals series.
It will be released 6/7 2011.

What do you say do you like/dislike this cover?

"Waiting On" Wednesday (1) This Side of the Grave

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is:

This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost.
(Night Huntress #5)
(Releasing 22 February 2011)

Danger waits on both sides of the grave.

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

What are you waiting for this week? Leave your links and I will check them out.

My first real week as a blogger

I thought about starting a blog for a long time but I was a little afraid about not having the time or what if people didn't find what I had to say interesting, but after reading a lot of different blogs I found out that it's enough just to be yourself and write about something you love and if I don't have the time to write a post everyday that's okay. I should post when I have the time and when I feel like I have something interesting to share. So after I came to that conclusion I started this blog in September 2010 but things happened in my life that made it impossible to have a blog at that time, but then a cold February day when I was sitting with my computer I found my blog again and I decided to continue my blog.

I know some will say that a week is nothing special but I have learned so much this week already and I have meet a lot people/bloggers from many different countries and everyone has been so sweet and helpful.
I was jumping around the house when I got 11 followers! Thank you for following that means a lot to me.
It's been a great week and I cannot wait to see what the next week brings...

Fast Forward

Happy Valentine's day!
I must admit that the only plan I have for today is catching up on some reading, but that will be nice with a cup of hot chocolate and some quit music in the background.
Maybe I will make something nice for dinner today.

A new week has just started and that means that it's time to look forward and think about what to read this week.

I have just started Lord of the Fading Lands by C. L. Wilson and I plan on finishing that in a couple of days.
Then I will read Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs and Spider’s Bite by Jennifer Estep as they have been on my shelf for some time.
Hopefully I will also get to The Body Finder and Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting.

Since it's valentine's day I would love to hear about your plans for today?

What do you plan on reading this week?

Red-Headed Stepchild
Jaye Wells
(Sabina Kane #1)
Published April 1st 2009

I have wanted to start this series for a long time but I have just not gotten around to it, I need to buy a copy!

RED-HEADED STEPCHILD DESCRIPTION:
In a world where being of mixed-blood is a major liability, Sabina doesn’t really fit in. And being an assassin – the only profession fit for an outcast – doesn’t help matters. But she’s never brought her work home. Until now.
Her latest mission is uncomfortably complex, and threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races. As Sabina scrambles to figure out which side she’s on, she uncovers a tangled political web, some nasty facts about her family and some unexpected new talents. Any of these things could be worryingly life-changing, but together, they could be fatal …
This time, it’s personal.

Archangel's Consort

Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders.
The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear.
An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed…

All Just glass
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
(Den of Shadows Sequel of Shattered Mirror)

From a legendary family of vampire-hunting witches, Sarah was raised to never trust a vampire, to never let her guard down, and to avoid all tricky attachments of the heart. But now Sarah IS a vampire—changed by the boy she thought she loved. Her family has forsaken her, and Sarah herself is disgusted by her appetite for blood. Aida Vida is Sarah's older sister, the good, reliable sibling who always does her family proud. But when Aida's mother insists that Sarah be found and killed, Aida is given the one assignment that she may not be able to carry out.
